Nokia has been busy this week and made public a considerable number of debut events, ranging from services to mobile phones. All these are meant mostly for emerging markets like India, but will also be expanded later on to Africa and Asia.
Services and handsets were launched at the same time, as they work together to offer something affordable for those that didn't have access to mobile telephony until now. Therefore, Nokia Life Tools and Mail on Ovi are services that offer basic information; they are 100% supported by low-end phones such as those recently announced.
Of course, out of all the low-end handsets announced today, these target the people that need an email account, a music player, information about the weather, or simply to stay in touch with family and friends.
The first handset announced, Nokia Supernova 7100 is a basic S40 5th Edition slider that offers support for Mail on Ovi. The latter enables users to create an email account and manage it directly on the mobile phone, without the need of a computer.
It may look like a low-end device, but Supernova 7100 offers a medium sized display supporting TFT, 65K colors, GPRS/EDGE Class 10 connectivities, support for SMS, MMS and Email, 1.3 Megapixel camera, Stereo FM radio with RDS, FM recording function, MP3 and MP4 players. The device is set for launch at the end of this year for a retail price estimated at 75 EUR.
The same emerging markets are 'blessed' with a music-oriented mobile phone, Nokia 5130 XpressMusic. Nokia promises that this will be the most affordable music phone up until now. The bar boasts a 2 Megapixel camera, a 2 inch display supporting 262K colors, dedicated music keys, GPRS/EDGE Class 12 connectivities, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support, microUSB 2.0, Stereo FM radio, music player compatible with MP3, MP4, eAAC+, WMA files, and a 3.5 mm AV jack.
Nokia 5130 XpressMusic comes with a 1GB microSD card in the sales package, but can also be upgraded up to 8GB. The phone is compatible with Share on Ovi and Mail on Ovi services. It is expected to be available on the market in the first quarter of 2009 for about 90 EUR.
The next three devices announced today are low-end phones featuring only the basic functions, but for a cheap price. Nokia 2320 classic, Nokia 2323 classic and Nokia 2330 classic are all compatible with the Mail on Ovi service and feature FM radio with recording function and Internet browser for Nokia Life Tools service.
Nokia 2320 and 2323 classic are expected to be available on the market during the second quarter of 2009 for an estimated retail price of 40 EUR. The Nokia 2330 classic should be out during the second quarter of 2009 with an approximate price tag of 50 EUR.
The last two low-end handsets announced by Nokia are also the cheapest mobile phones branded by the Finnish giant. Nokia 1202 and Nokia 1661 are especially designed to meet the demands of those who live in the countryside.
Therefore, Nokia 1202 features various functions such as: flashlight, loud ringtones, extended battery time (624 hours of standby time and eight hours of talk time), but also a phonebook for up to five users. Unfortunately, the handset doesn't offer any connectivity feature and cannot be used for Internet navigation purposes. The device is only compatible with the SMS standard and cannot be used to set an email account. It should be ready for shipping in the fourth quarter of 2008 at only 25 EUR.
Nokia 1661 is the cheapest mobile phone to feature color display (TFT, 65k colors) and FM radio function. It will be available in the first quarter of 2009 with an estimated retail price of 30 EUR.
